Racks are no longer fed with under floor air as the Servers now drag larger and higher speed airflow in from the front, necessitating removal of both front and rear doors on current racking and the under floor air being supplied from a floor grille in the front rack. Equipment in racks has to be located in such a way that the heat output per rack is the limiting factor, rather than available rack unit space.
There are new advances in Air Conditioning technology available to match the new physical design of servers, however planning should be considered in the direction that the next generation of Servers will have liquid or refrigerant cooling systems built in. These next generation Servers will have to be able to operate along side the current generation of equipment in the same environment. Forward planning for this inevitable change in the initial design will save large sums of money over the life cycle of the Infrastructure Housing Facility.
